“Follies” from National Theatre of London in Opera House Sunday, December 10!

Stephen Sondheim’s FOLLIES Starring Imelda Staunton

RAMParts Presents, in partnership with the National Theatre of London, brings the legendary Sondheim musical, Follies, to the big screen in the comfort of the Bellows Falls Opera House in Bellows Falls, Vermont on Sunday, December 10 at 1pm.

It’s New York, 1971. There’s a party on the stage of the Weismann Theatre. Tomorrow the iconic building will be demolished. Thirty years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather to have a few drinks, sing a few songs and lie about themselves. This is a Vaudeville Broadway reunion marked with sadness and regret, lost youth and second chances.
Sondheim’s homage to Old Broadway takes place on a lavish set designed by Vicki Mortimer, who created “a crumbling Broadway theater – its brick walls half-bulldozed, its stalls swallowed by rubble – it lets old ghosts mingle with lost souls and becomes much, much more than a mere memory play. Instead, it grows into something far more profound – a philosophical meditation on the passage of time and the agonies of aging.” (Variety)

Tracie Bennett, Janie Dee and Imelda Staunton play the magnificent Follies in this dazzling new production. Featuring a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21, it’s directed by Dominic Cooke (The Comedy of Errors). Musical standards from the show include such classics as Broadway Baby, The Road You Didn’t Take, Could I Leave You?, I’m Still Here and Live, Laugh, Love.
The original Broadway production opened in 1971 and was directed by Harold Prince and Michael Bennett, who also served as choreographer. The show was nominated for Grammy, Olivier, and eleven Tony Awards, going on to win seven.

Robert McBride, Director of the Rockingham Arts & Museum Project, is expanding arts programming locally by making it accessible in cost and availability. “Not everyone is able to afford travel to a city to see art exhibitions or Broadway shows. A trip can easily cost over $100/person in travel and ticket expense and becomes a barrier to the art experience. By creating the RAMParts ticketing platform and partnering with the Opera House, we are removing this barrier to create unique, spectacular offerings right here in Bellows Falls.”

Tickets for Follies are $20 per person and go on sale online Friday, November 17 through the RAMParts ticketing platform, www.rampartstickets.com. Doors open at 12:30, show at 1:00pm. Seating is general admission. The show is 2 hours, 15 minutes without intermission. Contact Susan MacNeil at 603-313-0052 or email susan@svidol.com for more information.
