Bellows Falls painter, Julia Jandrisits, will showcase portraits and florals in the Exner Block, next to the Downstreet Cafe.
Jandrisits is a self-taught artist, graduating over time from all the mediums of colored pencils, pen and ink, watercolors, and acrylics up through oils--her current medium of choice. She takes her inspiration from the old masters as well as the new, including the contemporary portraiture of Richard Schmid and Jeremy Lipking. "It's so important for artists to grow from one another. I idolize Sargent's technique, Chagall's spirit, and Khalo's honesty. If I can manifest those qualities in my own creative vision, then I've succeeded."
In a recent review of her painting entitled "White Lotus," Diana Lischer-Goodband writes, "The empty blue space in a good third of the painting balances out the intensity of detail in [the subject's] kimono--its intricate white and blue pattern tied round with a crimson sash. Evoking the work of John Singer Sargent with his detail, use of space and simple choices of color, the portrait captures the essence of Jandrisits' work. Offering a white lotus to the heaven-space before her, the woman in the kimono compels the viewer to focus on the tranquility contained in the fragile teacup of the lotus flower. The act of offering becomes the focus of the painting. Unexpectedly, the viewer is a witness to this subtle call to enlightenment and seems to be an important statement of the inner life of the artist herself."
Jandrisits' work was recognized as a finalist in The Artist's Magazine 25th Annual Art Competition and recently appeared in the book "Best of America Artists - Oil, Volume II", by Kennedy Publishing.
