Art Conservator's Bio / Statement

Works on Paper was established when Carolyn Frisa relocated to Vermont from Boston in 2008. Carolyn specializes in the conservation of drawings, watercolors, prints, historic documents, posters, maps, paper ephemera, blueprints and other architectural plans, and historic wallpaper. She is also experienced in treating parchment and vellum as well as three-dimensional paper artifacts such as fans and globes. Carolyn has spent the last ten years conserving a wide range of artistic and historic works on paper. Previous projects include the conservation of Audubon's Birds of America, prints by Alexander Calder, Henri Matisse, and Gustave Baumann, a collection of letters by Abraham Lincoln, and early American watercolors and portraits.

After receiving her undergraduate degree in the History of Art from Bryn Mawr College, she earned her Master of Arts in Paper Conservation from Camberwell College of Arts in London, England. She spent the following year as an assistant paper conservator at the Tate Britain Museum in London. Prior to establishing Works on Paper, Carolyn worked as an associate paper conservator at the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, Mass.

Carolyn is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) and a member of the AIC Book & Paper Group and the AIC Conservators in Private Practice Group. She is a member of the New England Conservation Association and the New England Museum Association. Carolyn is a founding member of the Collections Care Alliance. She has presented lectures to professional and public audiences on the identification and conservation of historic wallpaper and on the preservation and conservation of art and archival collections on paper. She actively participates in professional development in the field of conservation.
